They left the diner, and it was only a few minutes later that Stanley and Claire were parked outside Freddy’s.

“We should probably buy some food,” Stanley said as he opened his door. “I don’t know when we’ll be able to do that again.”

“You’re right," Claire said, climbing out of her own side. “And I should probably listen to you more,” Claire continued, hesitating. “Can I come in with you? I just get tired of being left alone, especially with some sort of assassin, you know, likely on our trail.”

Stanley looked at her. “You have doubted me until now. Has something happened that makes you believe that they are following us? Have you seen something that I might have missed?”

Claire shrugged, but shook her head. “No,” she said. “But if the good guys have you, then isn’t it possible the bad guys have something like you, too?”

Stanley cocked his head to one side. “To be honest, I had not considered the possibility,” he said. “However, I do not have sufficient data to make a determination as to the probability. It is conceivable, however unlikely, that the government or entity behind the contract on your life could have sufficiently advanced technology to duplicate my creation.” He looked around the area, letting his electronic eyes take in everything in their surroundings. “Having now been forced to consider the possibility, I believe it prudent to keep you with me at all times from now on. Come on, let’s go and purchase what we need.”

They stepped into the store and an older gentleman behind the cash register looked up with a smile. “Welcome to Freddy’s. If we don’t have it, you don’t need it. Let me know if I can help you find anything.”

“Thank you,” Stanley said. “Sure will.”

“Good. Me and Sally,” the old man continued, pointing to the old Labrador lying at his feet, “we’ll be here waiting.”

The big dog chose that moment to yawn, and Claire giggled as Stanley led her deeper inside the building. The store was like a hoarder’s delight, with shelves stacked to the brim with camping dear, food, and other useful items. Stanley handed Claire a basket. “We need to be quick. You get some soap and shampoo and whatever else you might need. I’ll grab the food and extra camping gear just in case we need to go off grid completely.” Claire nodded and started loading up her basket.

Schroeder had just about exhausted all of his resources to track his target and the agent protecting her. Perhaps he had underestimated his opponents, he thought, remembering how close Stanley’s bullet had come to his head. That was the work of a real marksman, but how had no one heard of him? If only he had more than just a face to go off of. Someone had to know, but getting that information and keeping his cover may be harder than he thought. Schroeder had never failed to acquire a target, and he wasn’t about to start now. He knew that, in his line of work, the penalty for failure was to become the target, himself.
